What is Coenzyme Q10?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as Ubiquinone (UQ) or Coenzyme Q (CoQ), is a coenzyme present in all eukaryotic organisms involved in aerobic respiration. It is a benzoquinone lipid soluble compound with a structure similar to vitamin K. Coenzyme Q10 is widely distributed in the human body and exists in various organ tissues, subcellular components, and plasma, but its content varies greatly. The mass concentration is relatively high in tissues and organs such as the liver, heart, kidneys, and pancreas. The main function is to drive human cells to produce energy.

Source of Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 can be increased in intake from the following foods: (1) Plants: The main source of food is "polyunsaturated oils" such as soybeans; The food with moderate content is "monounsaturated oil", such as olive oil. Saturated oils such as coconut oil are also present in other vegetables such as spinach and cauliflower. (2) Animals: marine food is rich in Q10, including mackerel, sardine, tuna, beef and chicken. (3) Nuts: such as peanuts, walnuts, cashews, etc. However, the CoQ10 content in these dietary sources is not sufficient to significantly increase CoQ10 levels in the human body.

Function of Coenzyme Q10

Since its launch in the late 1980s, CoQ10 has been widely used in industries such as food, cosmetics, dietary supplements, nutritional supplements, and food additives. In medicine, it is widely used for cardiovascular diseases. Becoming one of the most popular clinical nutrition drugs and dietary supplements worldwide. Research suggests that the main mechanisms of coenzyme Q10 include the following:

Powerful antioxidant: reduces oxidative stress and eliminates excessive free radicals.

Cellular productivity activator: maintains mitochondrial energy metabolism function and inhibits the occurrence of mitochondrial diseases.

Prevent the oxidation of low-density cholesterol: known oxidized low-density cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) is the key factor of atherosclerosis, which is widely involved in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, peripheral arterial diseases, etc.

Supporting cellular productivity: The myocardium, brain, pancreas, kidneys, liver, and adrenal glands are the most densely populated areas of mitochondria, as these organs undertake most of the body's functions.

Anti aging effect: Studies have shown that the body's ability to synthesize CoQ10 gradually decreases after the age of 30. Supplementation can delay various age-related diseases such as cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, and support the quality of life in old age.

Reducing the side effects of statins: Statins are first-line medications for treating high cholesterol, and frequent use can accelerate the depletion of CoQ10 levels in the body. Supplementing with CoQ10 can reduce the side effects of statins.

Application Prospect

It can be widely used in industries such as food, cosmetics, dietary supplements, nutritional supplements, and food additives. In medicine, it is widely used for cardiovascular diseases.

Market Prospect

The global coenzyme market value in 2023 is 689.5 million US dollars, with North American market share accounting for 26.3%. It is expected that by the end of 2033, the global coenzyme market value will reach 1.3819 billion US dollars with a compound annual growth rate of 7.2%, of which the compound annual growth rate of the East Asian market will reach 7.4%, making it the fastest-growing major market, and the compound annual growth rate of the European market will be 7.1%.
